Firms Knew of Cement Flaws Before Spill, Panel...
“Halliburton and BP knew weeks before the fatal explosion of the Macondo well in the Gulf of Mexico that the cement mixture they planned to use to seal the bottom of the well was unstable but still went ahead with the job, the presidential commission investigating the accident said on Thursday.
In the first official finding of responsibility for the blowout, which killed 11 workers and led...

Where did the oil go? →
The recent oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico released, as we have all seen on tv, a lot of oil. Quite how much is a “lot” is a bit of a guess, but roughly 4.9 million barrels, or 784 million litres*. What actually happened to this oil was reviewed recently in an article in Science (Kerr 2010). Only about 0.1% was recovered from beaches and marshes (that´s still an awful lot of oil!). About...
The oil spill's toxic trade-off →
Susan Shaw is an internationally recognized marine toxicologist, author and explorer. Susan shows evidence that breaking down the oil slick and keeping it off the shores by pumping toxic dispersant into the Gulf, is sparing some beaches only at devastating cost to the health of the deep sea.

Also! There’s a reason for BP to keep the well capped, and not just because BP wants to prevent fucking up the Gulf of Mexico anymore with their gushing oil! From the NY Times:
If a problem crops up, he said, collection systems could be restarted, some within a few hours. In a few weeks there should be enough capacity to collect more than the high estimate of...
BP takes a step backwards →
(via jesuisperdu:crookedindifference)
The cap sitting on the damaged well in the Gulf of Mexico will soon be removed for a short while, allowing oil to flow freely for a time, reports the Washington Post. The caps removal is part of BPs (BP) plan to replace it with “one that would capture most or all of the leaking crude.” The current cap is collecting 15,000 barrels a day, but an estimated...

Our scientists, btw, were very real about this being an actual and terrible possibility. The interesting thing is that people will say that these aren’t Deepwater tar balls, but SURPRISE, we can test for that. Which...

In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, they became a symbol of the government’s inept response to that disaster: the 120,000 or so trailers provided by the Federal Emergency Management Agency to people who had lost their homes.
The trailers were discovered to have such high levels of formaldehyde that the government banned them from ever...

Myths from the Right about the Disaster in the Gulf

The idea that environmental regulations forced the industry into deepwater, as proclaimed by Sarah Palin and echoed by pundits, is a whopper. The offshore industry set its sights on drilling in one thousand feet of water before significant federal environmental laws and regulations existed (many of these were...

marcovhv asked: As much as I support this BP related blog I do think the entire oil industry is rotten to the bone, not just BP. BP just happens to have made a fuckup right now but Big Oil is the same, no matter which company we look at.
